Intel XDK Event at Kenyatta University

The Intel XDK event at kenyatta University happened on 19th to 20th of March 2015 at the CIT Lab 018.

The easiest way to get your apps to the market.
Intel® XDK HTML5 Cross-platform Development Tool provides a simplified workflow to enable developers to easily design, debug, build, and deploy HTML5 web and hybrid apps across multiple app stores.
The intel XDK is simply a development tool that uses HTML% cross-platform to enable developers create and deploy their mobile applications. On 19th, it was a training day. It involved the getting started moment where the three Intel student partners from kenyatta University i.e. Mugiluri Anthony, Bob Raphtone Afwata and George Ouma facilitated.

They helped in the installation of the XDK and the step by step tutorial on developing on the XDK HTML5 cross plartform. A good number of giveaways were unleashed during this day keeping in mind that there was also tweeting, joining of the intel developer zone and liking of the "IntelAtKu" facebook page. The tweets/Hush tags for that day were; @intelatku @intel @intelEastAfrica  #intelAtKu #intelAndroid

On 20th of March 2015, then came the real hackathon. This was the day meant for developing and showcasing of apps. Developers went down to their apps from 8am - 1pm, at 2pm they did some polishing for an hour and then pitched their apps for competition. This was a very successful event keeping in mind that we got a total of 18 apps.

Top three apps

  1. Mini Commander app by Kim Too Flex. This app was able to remotely control the laptop. It was able to navigate in between the documents, music/video player and also turn of the laptop.
  2. The IOT app by Ochola Frank, Joseph Wainaina, Lester Obayi, Derrick Mungai and Allan Cheruyot. This app was able to control the indicator lights on an Intel Edison board.
  3. Mom to be app by Mukira Gitonga. This app was meant to help moms locate the nearest health center, locate the nearest physicians and show them were they can get reliable immediate medical attendance.

Gifts session

At least each and every person managed to getaway with something at the end of this Event, i.e during the training and Hackathon. Some of the giveaways were Intel merchandise like t-shitrs, backpacks, ear phones, 3 in one charger, flash disk, card holders, water bottles, pens, note books etc. We acknowledge one of the event judges from Intel by the name Miss Angela Sambu, the CIT lab caretakers, Madam Rachel from iHub, the Intel fraternity, the School of Engineering and Technology and all the Electrical & Electronics and the comp science students who participated for making the day a success.

Internet Of Things Buildathon with Intel

On the 28th March 2015 Intel will be hosting an IoT workshop/buildathon for students from JKUAT, KU and UoN. This event will be held at the iHub. It's limited to only these 3 universities because of the university donation program that Intel's Corporate Affairs Group is running with schools that have strong engineering departments, so unfortunately it can't open it up to every university.

Internet of things is basically a proposed development of the Internet in which everyday objects have network connectivity which allows them to send and receive data.

It is important to note that all this is possible when Intel processors and micro-controllers that are put in place.

In the Internet Of Things Buildathon, be prepared to encounter some of these programming plartforms and practice something out of them. Of course at the end of the day the question is always, What will you make?
To register for the Internet of things Buildathon, click here. Alternatively, you can also sign up to participate in the workshop/Buildathon.
